Traditionally, most homes use the standard curtains but if you have every tried replacing one of those things, you will know just how expensive they can be. Now just because you can get them for cheap, it doesn't mean that the quality is cheap. Many of these cheap blinds can be made of some quality materials. One of the problems with blinds in general is that they tend to break over time at the top where it's connected to the steel rollers. If you have one for a sliding door for example, since the blinds are longer, there is more weight that is put on the holes that the hooks the blinds onto the device. Over time, this can cause the blind to rip. Having those missing blinds simply does not make your room look good.
You will want to get ones that are designed a bit better such as ones that have a round protective slot to make them stronger and prevents the blinds from ripping. Whether you get the vertical blinds or the horizontal ones will depend on your taste but what I have found is that the horizontal ones seem to hold more dirt and dust. However, they are a bit easier to clean in my opinion but then again, the vertical ones don't have to be cleaned as often. In terms of cleaning, get one of those static dusters that hold the dust while you clean instead of using a regular towel that just pushes them away. You can also use a damp cloth as well.
Each one allows sunlight in differently so you will want to consider that when buying these cheap blinds. I have found that in terms of keeping light out at night, the horizontal ones do a better job than the vertical ones. During the day when you want to let light in, the vertical ones allow the light to straight into your room. The horizontal ones will allow you to shine the light up or down. These differences isn't really that much but it may be something you wan to consider. Also, horizontal ones will make your window look wider and vertical ones will make them look taller.

Compared to curtains, you can save a huge amount of money which in this economy, every little bit of money you can save counts.
